The Canon rumor of a new kit lens to come with the launch of the EOS 800D / Rebel T7i has led to speculation it may be a retractable, locking lens such as the EF-M 15-45mm or the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II equivalent. That certainly saves space and makes the whole camera more 'compact' but just a bit fiddly to use. Given the need to compete with mirrorless cameras and reduce the size would Canon take the same route?
Well, the latest images from digicame-info.com, show that the lens is a standard non-retractable lens but with an amazing saving in size non-the-less. Whilst just slightly thinner than the original EF-S 18-55mm IS STM it looks to be about 63mm in length, 12mm shorter than the original. There should be some weight saving also but that depends more on the internal construction of the lens.
