Arnarfjörður in the Beautiful Westfjörðs of Iceland
The Westfjörðs of Iceland are located in the North West corner and linked to the main Island via a narrow stretch of land less than 5 miles across. There are two roads connecting this region to the main Island, the Route 60 on the west and Route 68 on the east that both link to the Route 1 ring road. To the west side are these thumb like mountain ranges with fjords separating them, they look on the map like pieces of Ginger or Turmeric root. Ísafjörður sits toward the top of these and serves as a convenient location for the cruise ships but also has an airport for expediency. There is much to admire about this area for its sheer natural beauty, as well as some notable landmarks worth a visit.
Dynjandi is a series of waterfalls on the Dynjandisá river flowing into the Dynjadavogur Bay at the end of the Arnarfjörður in the Icelandic Westfjords. There are eight named falls in the series with the top fall being the Dynjandi or Fjallfoss. Starting at the coach park the falls are, Bæjarfoss, Hundafoss, Kvíslarfoss, Hrísvaðsfoss, Göngmannafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, Hæstahjallafoss and finally Dynjandifoss.
The Látrabjarg bird cliffs on the most westerly point are some of the largest in Europe. At 14km long and rising over 440m above the sea, filled with masses of nesting birds that make it a photographers dream. Sadly, although easily accessible by car, it is too far for this particular journey.
Rauðasandur or Red Sand beaches on the southern shores make for a stunning seascape and miles of flat beach to enjoy.
Certainly a trip around Westfjörðs is on my bucket list.
